May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This post features a small piece of my struggle with mental health and several personal strategies I've used to stop the chaotic spiral. 🌪️
My childhood was like a rollercoaster ride through dysfunction. Chaos was our constant companion, swirling around us like a never-ending storm. It wasn't easy navigating through the turbulent waters of my childhood, and at times, it felt like I was barely keeping my head above water. I was in survival mode [below the line].
The dysfunction in my family cast a shadow over everything. Arguments were the soundtrack of our home, and peace was a foreign concept. It was exhausting, both mentally and emotionally, to constantly be on edge, never knowing when the next emotional eruption would occur. 🌋
As an adult, I realized the toll that growing up and marrying into a similar situation was taking on my mental health. Anxiety became my constant companion and depression lurked in the shadows like a snake ready to coil tightly around me when I least expected it.
Through therapy and life coach certification training, I slowly spied the glimmer of hope. 🌟
🎯 Mental health, chaos, and self-awareness.
Let’s unpack it.
The power of self-awareness, of looking inward and understanding ourselves on a deeper level isn't easy, but it is necessary to unpack what holds us back.
When we let our anxiety or childhood wounds lead the way, we remain fixated on our brokenness. Yet, when we truly understand ourselves and the roots of our chaos, we gain the power to transform our struggles into profound sources of strength. My book, You Were Born for More, outlines stories and strategies [including the thrive model] for moving from survival mode to thrive mode.

When we take the time to deeply understand our past and recognize the patterns that trigger our chaos, we can channel our experiences into empathy and strength to thrive more often.
This transformation enables us to shape our destinies, foster personal and collective growth, and contribute to progress and well-being.
[If you or someone you know struggles with depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns, reach out to a therapist or counselor. They can provide valuable support and guidance tailored to your specific needs.]
If you seek to crush homegrown chaos, here are a few of my time-tested tips:
1️⃣ Stay Connected: Build a strong support network of friends, family, or support groups you can trust and who can hold space for you [without judgment].
2️⃣ Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to activities or commitments that drain your energy, cause stress, or create emotional discomfort.
3️⃣ Create a go-to inspirational song playlist. When you feel off, put on your headphones and immerse yourself in the playlist.
4️⃣ Walk in nature: Focus on aesthetic details like the shapes of leaves, flowers, or trees, or pay attention to the sound of the ground under your feet.
📌 [PRO TIP] Do something different. Experiment with aromatherapy using essential oils like lavender or citrus or try a new exotic fruit or a unique dish.
Engaging your senses can help shift your focus and lift your spirits. 🌟
