Work teams

Do you have a tough assignment ahead of you that will create significant change in your organization? A restructuring, merger, or layoff? A change in strategy or focus that will impact your team? To effectively lead people through difficult changes, it’s important to understand how each person reacts to change.

🎯 The most important quality [and skill] to effectively manage change is TRUST.

🧳 How do we earn our team’s trust though complex changes? Let’s Unpack it.

The challenge for you as a leader is that everyone reacts differently to change. Some of us get hung up on the ending. Some of us approach change with hesitation, unsure of how to proceed, and some of us embrace change and get excited about the prospects of a positive future.

While change is constant, it’s not black and white. It’s a continuum. We all move from phase to phase in different way and at different times because of who we are, our past experiences, how we view work, and how significant the change is to us personally.

👉 Here are a 5 tips to earn trust through complex changes.

1️⃣ Build Rapport: Building rapport with your team is the first step in gaining their trust. This means taking the time to understand each member's strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. Show genuine interest in their well-being and professional growth. When your team sees that you care about them as individuals, not just as cogs in the corporate machine, they are more likely to trust your intentions and follow your lead through changes.

2️⃣ Communicate Clearly: Clear communication is critical during times of change. Be transparent about what the changes entail and why they are necessary. Explain the impact these changes will have on the team and the organization. When you articulate the vision and the steps to get there, your team can better understand the direction and their role in the journey, which fosters a sense of security and trust.

3️⃣ Empower Others: Empowering your team to take ownership of the change process can build trust and commitment. Encourage their input and involve them in decision-making where appropriate. When team members feel their voices are heard and their contributions valued, they are more likely to trust your leadership and invest in the change process.

4️⃣ Stay Consistent: Consistency in your actions and expectations is key to maintaining trust. If you say you'll provide updates weekly, stick to that schedule. Consistently reinforce the reasons for the changes and the team's progress. When your behavior is predictable and your message is steady, it provides a sense of stability that fosters trust during turbulent times

📌 [PRO TIP] Offer Support: Offering support to your team is crucial during complex changes. Provide the resources they need to adapt, whether it's training, mentoring, or simply a listening ear.
